What Is Anxiety Disorder?

Anxiety disorders are a group of mental health conditions characterized by feelings of worry, nervousness, and fear that are excessive, irrational, and overwhelming. These feelings can be so intense that they interfere with a person's daily life, making it difficult to work, attend school, or even leave the house. There are several types of anxiety disorders, including generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, and specific phobias.

  • Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is characterized by excessive, unrealistic worry and tension about everyday events and activities. People with GAD may worry about their health, finances, family, or work, even when there is no apparent reason to do so.

  • Panic disorder is characterized by recurrent and unexpected panic attacks, which are sudden and intense episodes of fear and discomfort. These attacks may include physical symptoms such as a racing heart, sweating, trembling, and difficulty breathing.

  • Social anxiety disorder, also known as social phobia, is a fear of being judged or evaluated negatively by others in social or performance situations. People with social anxiety disorder may avoid social situations or endure them with intense anxiety.

  • Specific phobias are intense fears of specific objects or situations, such as flying, heights, or spiders. These phobias can cause a person to avoid the object or situation, even if it interferes with their daily life.
